元（element）とは，集合（set）を構成する個々の要素のこと．

$a$ が集合 $A$ の元（element）であるということは， $a$ が集合 $A$ に属する（membership），あるいは， $a$ が集合 $A$ に含まれる，とも表現されます． $a \in A$
